  • Using 3/4" oak wood to make the base to mount the model in a glass case.
The base is made longer than the model and is routed out 1/4" deep to receive the glass case with moulding. A block of wood is mounted at an angle to receive a brass name plate.

  • Now I have the plans to start making the model and I start with the hull, which is cut from a block of bass wood.

  • The hull is cut free hand on a 14" band saw (rough cut first) then the shaping and sanding starts using templates I made from the plans enable to conform to them.Using brass tubing to make the drive shafts by soldiering various sizes seems to be the easiest and best way to make them, then attaching them to the hull into pre-drilled holes.

  • A piece of bass wood 1" thick is used to make the 2nd deck a piece of 1/6" veener plywood is attached for the extended forward wings and the complete top of the 2nd deck,3"-50 gun tubs are attached using 040 styrene (note) the stantion
    holes are pre-drilled.

  • The bridge and forward superstructures are built, using again bass wood, styrene brass wire.I make the 03 section and
the upper part of the bridge, pre-drilling port holes and wire railings.

  • The forward 3"-50 gun platform is made (basswood & styrene) with brass wire for the stantions.
Port and starboard wind breakers are made of 1/16" plywood with the openings cut out very carefully.
The 2 rudders are made of wood attaching a piece of brass to install into the hull.
After the shafts and rudders are attached to the hull I prime the hull,it is then sanded and the bottom is
    masked off to be painted.

  • The mast is built next ,wood dowels - 1/4" and 1/8" are used along with 040 styrene and brass wire.
The 2 ships smoke stacks are built from 1-1/2" wood dowels, they are cut and sanded to the shape required,
the searchlight platform is made of styrene and wire.

  • After making all the guns and small parts and fittings I dry fit them before I prime them.

  • Painting the hull is done after I mask off  below the water line, after its dry I paint the deck with a sea blue color paint.
All the superstructures, bridge, gun mounts and small fittings such as bitts, chocks, depth charge racks, torpedo tubes,
mast, motor whale boat and davits are painted gray.

  •   The brass props are attached to the shafts. Then construction of the 2nd deck, 3rd deck gun platforms, masts, smoke stacks to the main deck next being careful that they are placed in their correct location on the model.
Using a fine good quality string the stantion and mast are stringed attaching  the signal flags.

  • The anchors and anchor chains are glued in place,841 numbers are put on the hull.
After everything is assembled and my model is complete it is mounted to the wood base on the brass pedestals.
5 pieces of 1/8" glass are cut and are put together using silicone and all the exposed edges are trimmed in 1/4"-14
    gauge brass stock.

  • The case is placed over the model into the pre-routed groves in the wood base.
A brass name plate is glued to the block of wood on the wood base.
